Woman Fleeing Nightclub Fight Shot By Officer

Police Say Woman Hit 2 With Her Car, Came At Officers

POSTED: Sunday, October 19, 2008

A woman accused of hitting two people with her car trying to leave a nightclub early Sunday morning, then tried to hit a police officer is recovering after being shot by a police officer.

Police said Victoria Roberts, 21, was trying to leave a club called "In Cahoots" in the 700 block of Edison Avenue about 1:30 a.m. as police arrived to try and break up a fight going on in a large crowd in the parking lot.

"There were like a bunch of different altercations going on," witness Karachi Covington said. "It was too much for the police. It had to be.

Officers said Roberts got into a car with others they believed where involved in the fight and tried to leave.

"She went to back up -- back up at an accelerated rate -- and struck two pedestrians," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Assistant Chief Ron Lendvay said.

Investigators said the two pedestrians didn't have serious injuries, but Roberts failed to stop and continued to drive aggressively.

"As (the officers) tried to stop her, she began to drive more erratically, struck a vehicle in the parking lot, clipping that and driving toward officers who were trying to clear out individuals at the club," Lendvay said.

Police said that's when two patrol officers fired several shots at her car. Roberts was shot in the shoulder.

"A vehicle is every bit as deadly as a firearm or any other weapon," Lendvay said. "We see that over and over and over."

Roberts was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with what was described as a non-life-threatening injury.

No officers were hurt in the incident.

Roberts is charged with aggravated battery and assault on a law enforcement officer.

This was the 21st police-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year.
