JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man wanted in the slaying of a woman and her father found dead Wednesday night was shot Thursday morning when officers caught up with him in a Northside cemetery, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Police said Alonzo Jones Jr., 29, was shot about 8:15 a.m. by an officer in Evergreen Cemetery on North Main Street when he refused to drop an assault rifle. He suffered a leg wound and was hospitalized at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.
"When faced with an obvious life-threatening situation, (the officer) discharged one shot. Jones was shot in the lower leg, causing him to drop his rifle he was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital," said JSO Chief Rick Graham.
No officers were injured.
The police-involved shooting happened about 12 hours after Jones was named a person of interest after the bodies of his girlfriend and her father were found in a Westside home.
Wednesday night, police responding to a 911 call from a man who said his son had killed his girlfriend and that woman's father responded to Jones' home in the 1000 block of Mackinaw Street.
The SWAT team responded, but no one was found in that home. Later that night, officers did find Jihan Borders and her father, Charles Borders, dead inside the father's home on Miriam Street, several miles away.
Police said Jihan Borders lived with Jones on Mackinaw Street and they had a child together.
"It was a domestic issue," JSO Chief David Stevens said. "I don't want to speculate at this point. When we get more details, we'll release those."
Late Wednesday, police asked for the public's help finding Jones, who they described as a person of interest in the case. They put out his description and information about the car he was believed to be driving.
"When I found out they were looking for him it practically floored me," said Jones' next-door neighbor, Sandra Hunter.
She said Jihan Borders had moved out two weeks ago.
"I believe they were having problems because I heard some arguing over there," Hunter said. "She was nice. She was kind of shy, and he always said hi to us and talked with my husband all the time."
Jones is charged with two counts of murder. He is expected to be booked into the Duval County Jail after he is discharged from the hospital.
Police said the man who first alerted them to the situation was cooperating with detectives.
