A man who lost a race a Putnam County County Commission seat two months ago was arrested Friday and charged with grand theft and insurance fraud.
William Ernest Hughey, 33, was arrested after an investigation that began when he filed a report claiming his car was stolen.
Deputies said Hughey said on April 21 his 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck was stolen from a home in San Mateo. Acting on a tip that Hughey had arranged for the vehicle to be taken, investigators learned the pickup was towed by two people, one of whom was an acquaintance of Hughey.
When detectives learned Geico Insurance had paid Hughley over $5,000 for a claim the vehicle was stolen,
On Friday, Putnam County deputies obtained an arrest warrant charging Hughey with grand theft and insurance fraud. Hughley was arrested, but immediatly posted $1,004 bond and was released.
Deputies said related charges were also pending against Curtis Rogers, Hughley's acquaintance who is accused of helping tow the vehicle.
Hughley got 441 votes in the Aug. 26 primary -- coming in last in a four-way race for Putnam County Commission District 3.
