Man, Woman Arrested After Beer Heist, Chase

POSTED: Tuesday, November 11, 2008

A man and a woman were arrested early Tuesday after deputies said they stole a case of beer, led police on a chase and attempted to ram three patrol cars before landing in a ditch.

The incident began at a Kangaroo gas station in the 900 block of South Ponce de Leon Boulevard and ended off Dobbs Road.

A deputy said he spotted a suspect pickup truck, a yellow Ford F-150, and attempted to pull it over before the driver began to speed and drive erratically. The deputy said he stopped pursuing the truck but continued to follow it from a distance.

The deputy said he then saw the pickup truck turn into a church parking lot, where the suspect began driving in circles. At one point, the driver tried to hit three cruisers before losing control and crashing into a ditch, deputies said.

According to a written report by a deputy, the driver of the yellow truck, Barry Gibby, attempted to flee on foot before an officer deployed his Taser gun and struck the suspect. A K-9 officer was also used to help apprehend Gibby.

Gibby and Kelly Brooks, who was also inside the pickup truck, were arrested.

Gibby was charged with reckless driving, knowingly driving on a suspended license, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing and attempting to elude, resisting arrest without violence and violation of probation.

Brooks was taken into custody in connection with the retail theft of beer.
