Police: Wedding Guest's Death Suspicious

Woman's Body Found In Ocean

POSTED: Tuesday, November 11, 2008

One day after identifying a body pulled from the ocean on Sunday as that of missing woman Melissa Lightsey, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office announced that the woman's death is suspicious.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said it's continuing its investigation into the 36-year-old's death.

Lightsey's husband reported last seeing her swimming in chest-deep water near Surfside Park at Vilano Beach shortly after midnight Sunday.

According to Lightsey's husband, the woman had been at a wedding reception in downtown St. Augustine on Saturday evening before the couple went to Surfside Park. He said she went into the water to swim.

After an extensive search on Sunday, a boater found Lightsey's body just before 3 p.m. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said there was trauma to the body possibly caused by a passing boat

According to the sheriff's office, the preliminary findings from both the medical examiners office along with field investigative detectives with the sheriff’s office homicide unit indicate the woman's death is suspicious.

"We've conducted numerous interviews. Again, this incident occurred after a wedding reception and there were numerous people that we could have interviewed and we've interviewed quite a number … we're asking anyone who may have been there or has any information at all, either at the reception or around the events as they occurred or anywhere along the beaches, to give us a call," said Sgt. Chuck Mulligan.

On Tuesday, the medical examiner had not yet released a completed preliminary autopsy report with Lightsey's cause of death.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at 904-824-8304. Callers may also be eligible for a reward and remain anonymous by reporting information to Crime Stoppers at 888-277-8477.
