Farm Worker Hit By Backing Semi Dies

POSTED: Wednesday, November 12, 2008

A farm worker was killed Wednesday afternoon when he was caught between a tractor and its trailer near Elkton.

According to St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Chuck Mulligan, the semi was backing up at the time.

"There was a semi tractor trailer that was attempting to back up to a trailer to take a load. In the process, there was of course the driver of the tractor and someone who was assisting him in an effort to get the two units connected when somehow, in some manner, the individual on the ground got pinned between the two units," said Mulligan.

The victim, 54-year-old Gerald Jones, of East Palatka, died at the farm along county Road 305.

Traffic homicide investigators were investigating the incident. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is expected to become involved in the case.
