1 Shot In Westside Mobile Home

Residents Say Victim Died At Hospital

POSTED: Wednesday, November 19, 2008
UPDATED: 7:23 pm EST November 19, 2008

A man shot several times inside a mobile home on Nussbaum Street early Wednesday morning has died, his roommate who was there at the time told Channel 4.

Police have not commented since saying the 23-year-old victim was taken to emergency surgery just after the 12:30 a.m. shooting.

Homicide detectives at the home gathering information about the crime took the three men who lived in the home downtown for questioning, but returned them to the neighborhood just before 7 a.m.

One of the men in the home during the shooting told Channel 4's Karin Hirschey that three people -- two men and a woman, each wearing a hooded sweatshirt -- kicked in the front door just after midnight and demanded money.

According to the police report, the shooting victim did not speak English and did not understand the robbers' request.

"I say 'I don't have money and I kick him,'" said one of the Spanish-speaking men at the home told Channel 4.

The man the local station is only calling Stephen said one of the men then pulled out a gun, grabbed about $170 in cash and a passport, then shot his roommate before leaving.

"We're all afraid and we don't know what to do," Stephen said. "We don't know if they are going to come again. No one knows."

Kristine Hamman, who lives in the next home with her son, heard the shots.

"My son is 3 years old and I don't want to lose him," Hamman said. "I don't want to lose my family and I don't want to lose my life either."

Other neighbors worry that crime and violence are getting worse in the area.

"For something bad to happen to such quiet people, it's makes me think, 'Who's next?'" Joe Stone said. "I mean, it could be my house; it could be my neighbor’s house."

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said they could not confirm the victim had died or release any information about the robbers, but said some information might be released on Thursday morning.
