St. Marys Residents Find KKK Fliers Littering Yards

POSTED: Thursday, November 20, 2008

Someone has been handing out memos of hate in one St. Marys, Ga., community where neighbors said they found unsettling messages in the form of letters littered across their lawns.

Residents on Rose Dew Court spoke with Channel 4 on Thursday evening about rolled-up fliers that contained racist propaganda they said appear to be from the Ku Klux Klan.

David Mounds said at first he thought the flier was an advertisement. However, after he picked it up and read it, he found out differently.

"As I read further, I realized it was just promoting hate," Mounds said.

A quick glance at the note and the reader might think it's doing just the opposite because across the top in big, bold print the note says, "Stop Racism."

The message appears to be from the national office of the Ku Klux Klan, and neighbors said they are not happy.

"If it's not equality for all, then it should not be distributed," Mounds said.

Different neighbors on the cul de sac received different fliers. One says, "Stop Racism," and another says "White and Proud."

Neighbors said it's all a bunch of garbage.

"I think most of them will just throw it away," said another resident, John Herbst.

The flier Herbst received included a page on black history heroes that pointed out everything the KKK apparently thinks is wrong with the heroes.

"This kind of brings it close to home that somebody was in my neighborhood passing this stuff out. I don't like it, and I wish I knew who it was. I would have confronted them," said Herbst.

Channel 4 reporter Jennifer Bauer tried to contact the national office of the KKK through its Web site because it doesn’t list a phone number; however, she has not heard back from the group.

In the meantime, Mounds and Herbst said they are both going to work to make sure the message they found littering their yards is stopped.

"I'm going to use this to help light my fire in the fireplace," said Herbst.

Neighbors said the area is diverse and that they've never had any problems with racism in the past. They said they don't who left the notes or why.
