2 Killed, 6 Hurt In Putnam County Crash

UPDATED: 8:11 pm EST November 21, 2008

Two people were killed and six others injured when a car pulled in front of an oncoming pickup truck on state Road 20 just before midnight Thursday.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Mazda driven by 43-year-old Stacy Nelson, of Hawthorne, pulled out from Twin Lakes Road and was struck by a pickup driven by Shannon Stringer, 21, of Hollister.

The FHP said Nelson died at the scene and front-seat passenger Justin Grouse, 16, of Interlachen, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Shands Medical Center in Gainesville.

Three people in the back seat were critically injured. Nicholas Burman, 21, of Interlachen; Sonya Wilson, 17, of Hawthorne; and Rachel Clardy, 14, of Hawthorn; were all transported to Shands in Gainesville.

Channel 4 was told the group of young people in Nelson's vehicle were heading home after a church youth group gathering.

Family members said Nelson was taking her daughter, Wilson, and the other people home after a church Thanksgiving social.

"She liked being around kids. I think it helped keep her feeling like she was young again," said Nelson's brother, Scott Wilson.

He said Nelson was on the custodial staff of Hawthorne Middle/High School, where her daughter attends class. The 17-year-old was in a medically induced coma because of the crash.

On Friday, a crisis management team was at the teen's school to help those hurting emotionally from the crash.

"(Nelson) was my baby sister, you know? She was always special for all of us. She was one of those who loved the kids and loved her family," Wilson said.

Neighbors who live near the scene of the crash said construction in the area makes it difficult to see, and they said they've seen similar crashes in the past.

"How many more accidents do we need in this area before they decided to get this section done?" said one resident.

Troopers said none of the five people in the Mazda was wearing a seat belt.

Stringer, of Hollister, suffered only minor injuries and was taken to Putnam Medical Center. Passenger Ashley Rayes, 20, of Hollister, was seriously injured and passenger David Wohland, 22, of St. Augustine, suffered minor injuries, according to the FHP.
