FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. -- Flagler County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Daytona North man Friday on child abuse charges in connection with Nov. 8 injuries sustained by a 1-year-old boy.
Wayne Anthony Wright, 29, of 2344 Grove St., was being held without bond in the Flagler County Inmate Facility.
Sheriff’s investigators said they believe that while Wright was caring for the infant, the man intentionally dropped and shook the child. When deputies arrived at the home on the morning of Nov. 8, the baby was unresponsive and a deputy began to administer CPR.
The child’s mother was working when the incident occurred, according to investigators.
The infant was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler, and then transferred to Wolfson’s Hospital in Jacksonville where doctors determined the injuries were sustained by “shaken baby syndrome”.
Sheriff’s investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Wright Friday morning and took him into custody.
“This is a sad case. This child is a helpless victim,” said Flagler County Sheriff Donald W. Fleming.
The child has recovered, but did suffer long term brain damage, according to investigators.
