FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A memorial ceremony in Fort Lauderdale is set to honor 14 Navy men who mysteriously went missing 63 years ago.
The Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Historical Association will be hosting a U.S. Navy Flight 19 Memorial Ceremony on Friday at the Navy Park at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The program was scheduled for 1:55 p.m.
Officials say Flight 19 was the designation of five Navy TBM Avenger Torpedo Bombers that disappeared on a training exercise out of Fort Lauderdale on Dec. 5, 1945. The aircraft and 14 crew members were never found. Neither was one of the search planes.
U.S. Navy investigators concluded that Flight 19 became disoriented and ditched at sea when the aircraft ran out of fuel. Some questioned the explanation, causing doubts which helped develop the Bermuda Triangle theory.
