Nassau County Jail Escape Plot Foiled
POSTED: Monday, December 29, 2008
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Nassau County officials said they have thwarted an escape plot and charged one inmate with attempted escape and another man with helping in the plot.
On Dec 17, detention facility personnel found during a daily inspection that the perimeter fence and concertina wire was breached. They also discovered a bundle of tools including a hammer, chisel, crowbar, hacksaw and carbide blades placed on the window ledge outside of a cell.
A bag containing civilian clothes and shoes was found behind an air-conditioning unit just outside of the cell.
Leads led sheriff's personnel to suspect Gary Martin Koester, of Yulee. Investigators said Martin is the former cellmate of David Sanders, of conspiring to aide in an escape attempt. Sanders is currently serving time for a string of armed robberies earlier this year.
Koester confessed that Sanders had approached him and conspired a plot to provide Sanders with tools and clothes in exchange for an undisclosed sum of money.
Sanders was rebooked on the additional charges of attempted escape, conspiracy to escape and criminal mischief.
Koester was booked in the Nassau County Detention Facility and charged with conveying tools into a jail to aid escape, conspiracy, burglary and criminal mischief.
