Ohio Triple Homicide Suspect Caught In Middleburg

POSTED: Tuesday, December 30, 2008
UPDATED: 9:41 pm EST December 30, 2008

A man wanted in connection with the slaying of three people in Ohio last week was arrested Sunday night in Middleburg.

Just before Christmas, the Clay County Sheriff's Office received information from the Scioto County sheriff that Paul Balmer, 47, might be staying in a subdivision off U.S. Highway 21. Deputies with a description of Balmer's vehicle -- a Toyota Rav 4 with Ohio tags -- patrolled the area Sunday, spotted the car and stopped a man leaving a home on Alberta Court who they believed was Balmer.

"He didn't say a word. We arrested him and made contact with the authorities in Ohio," Clay County Lt. Barry Abramowitz said.

After he was identified, Balmer was booked into the Clay County jail and held until he can be extradited to Ohio to face charges in the shooting deaths of Ed Mollett, 46, his wife, Juanita Mollett, 43, and daughter, 20-year-old Christina Mollett.

Neighbors said the couple's 6-year-old grandson, who they described as covered in blood, ran down a hill to alert a neighbor about the incident. The boy told police the shooter was "a lady with black hair."

"Some girl came up there ... and they killed my mamma and my sissy and my pappy," the child told authorities in a 911 call.

Balmer's live-in girlfriend, Kara Garvin, 29, turned herself in to sheriff's detectives several hours after the shooting. She was charged with three counts of aggravated murder. She was being held on $1.5 million bond.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty Donini told WSAZ-TV that the killers knew their victims and the crime could be drug-related.
