ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Golf carts will soon be legal on some country roads in St. Johns County.
The county commission unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday allowing carts to share roads with cars, but it will only apply in areas where the speed limit is below 25 mph.
Several housing developments have supported the concept to cut down on automobile traffic.
Commission Chairwoman Cynthia Stephenson said developers will have to apply to have certain roads approved for golf cart use and county traffic engineers will then decide if golf carts should be allowed.
The law only applies to unincorporated parts of the county; St. Augustine, St. Augustine Beach and Hastings would not be included.
