JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Wednesday night's $105 million Powerball drawing was the first since the Sunshine State joined the popular mega-lottery.
Lottery officials said well over a million Powerball tickets were sold the first day they went on sale in Florida.
On Wednesday, those who tried their luck by purchasing a $1 ticket waited and hoped to cash in on the jumbo jackpot.
If a player matches all five numbers and the Powerball number, he or she could win as much as $105 million. However, tickets matching the first five numbers only are still big winners.
The Powerball drawing was the first in Florida, and it gave some usually reluctant players the curiosity to give it a shot.
"I don't usually buy lottery tickets, but it's a Powerball and there's enough to go around," said Erin Collins.
"This is my first time playing ever -- any kind of lottery," said another Powerball player, Kimberly Lessett.
"Hopefully my chances are pretty good," said Steven Bassett.
For just a buck players were able to buy into the multi-state lottery, which offers huge jackpots. Until now, some Floridians drove to South Carolina to play the Powerball because it was the closest state to participate.
The players Channel 4 talked with on Wednesday night had different ideas of what they'd do with the winnings.
"Buy a new guitar and rule the world," Bassett said.
"I'll buy a house for me and my kids, and I will share with you and my mom. Yeah, you get a little cut," Lessett said.
"I'll let you know if I win. You'll probably be at my house. Actually, you won't because I'll be in the islands and no one will know where I am for a week," Collins said.
The Powerball drawing was held at 10:59 p.m. The winning numbers were: 23, 31, 33, 38, 52 and Powerball 24.
