JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville mother said several Ribault Middle School students, including her daughter, were kicked off the school bus on Friday and left to find their own way home.
Parent Lisa Jackson said she was outraged when she got a call from her daughter, Kaylan Edem, an eighth-grader at Ribault, saying she and every other child on board the bus leaving school was told to get off.
"She just called me and said, 'Mom, the students were playing in the bus. They were disorderly, and the bus driver just stopped the bus,'" Jackson said.
"She just said, 'Just leave. I'm not taking you to your bus stop,'" Edem said.
The girl admitted the students on the bus were out of control and kept pulling the emergency handle. She said after threatening two times, the driver pulled over and told the kids to get off the bus.
"The second when time they did it, she stopped right down there and said, 'Get off,'" Edem said. "I was pretty mad because I didn't feel like walking and she's supposed to take us to our correct stop, and it was inappropriate for her to just do that."
Edem and a whole busload of students were dropped at Rutledge Pearson Elementary. Jackson said she had to scramble to find someone to pick up her daughter.
"Two miles away from the bus stop, in an unknown area that my daughter was not familiar with -- anything could have happened," Jackson said.
Many of the stranded students walked home, but Jackson said they shouldn't have been put in that situation.
"When we leave our children in the care of school officials, whether it's a bus driver or a teacher, we expect for them to be safe, and at this day at this moment my student was not safe," Jackson said.
The bus company, First Student, said it is aware of the incident and will investigate by talking with the bus driver and students before determine the appropriate course of action.
