Right Whale, Newborn Spotted Off Daytona Beach

Pregnant Whales Seek Warm Water To Give Birth

A right whale and its 2,000-pound newborn were spotted Monday off Volusia County.

Whale watchers in Daytona Beach gathered to watch the whales frolic in the ocean, about 50 yards off the coastline.

Biologists said pregnant whales travel to warm waters off Florida to give birth.

Over the last month, nearly 100 right whales have been spotted along the Florida coastline.

Scientists say there are up to 400 right whales left in the wild.

About half of them migrate to warm waters off the coasts of Florida and Georgia during the cooler months. They give birth to calves there.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service asks boaters who see a right whale to slow and not assume the whale will move from your path. Wildlife officials urge people to record the latitude and longitude or identify the location of the whale with regard to buoy, note the direction of the whale's travel and notify authorities and other ships in the area immediately.
