JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Some shoppers at a flea market on the Northside found themselves in the middle of a shootout when two men exchanged gunfire in a parking lot Friday afternoon.
"They were shooting at each other back and forth like on a western," said one witness.
The incident began when a man and two accomplices tried to carjack another man in the parking lot of the Norwood Flea Market. However, the victim was armed.
"I don't know the details of how much shooting, but there was shooting on both sides," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Wesley Davidson.
The suspects eventually stole another person's car, took off out of the flea market parking lot, and then dumped the stolen vehicle about a mile away near Interstate 95.
Witness Sharon Williams said it was her friend's car that was stolen.
"They wanted her to get in the car, and she said no and gave them the keys, and they jumped and took off," Williams said.
Another witness, Eddie Daniels, said his pickup truck was hit by a bullet during the shootout.
"It was going like, 'Pow, pow, pow.' I couldn't see much because we pulled over trying to be on the safe side where the bullets wouldn't hit us," Daniels said.
By Friday evening, investigators said had one man in custody.
"We have one of the persons that was accompanying the original shooter," Davidson said.
They have also been talking to the attempted carjacking victim who fired back. According to authorities, that person had a concealed weapons permit and will likely not face charges.
"If your life's in danger, you have the right to use force in a responsible manner," Davidson said.
It remains unknown whether the carjackers were shot during the incident. Police said no one with whom they've spoken was hit. However, they said if a suspect were hit, they'd find out because they're monitoring all area hospitals.
