YULEE, Fla. -- One person received a minor injury Saturday morning when a fire broke out on a charter bus transporting an Ohio college baseball team to a tournament in Lakeland, Fla.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a player from Mount Union College suffered minor injuries to his hand when the fire sparked on a stretch of Interstate 95 in Nassau County just north of the Duval County line. He was treated at the scene and released.
Player Chris Bondra said someone began screaming that the bus was on fire. Bondra says the coach had to break down the door, and students sitting in the back of the bus broke open windows and jumped out.
Harry Paidas, the school's vice president for public affairs and marketing, says the team was taken to the Florida welcome station on a local bus.
Team officials have decided to continue with the trip. The bus suffered about $60,000 in damage.
Officials with the Nassau County Fire Department are still investigating the cause of the fire.
