JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man who police say has scammed several women out of thousands of dollars and who has outstanding warrants in four states is being sought in the Jacksonville area after an alleged incident on Monday.
According to the sheriff's office, Douglas Johnson met a Jacksonville woman on an Internet dating site. They said the two dated for a month and a half and that Johnson portrayed himself as being an active Lt. Colonel in the United States Army assigned to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.
Johnson proposed to the woman, and she allowed him to move in with her. However, police said, while the woman was at work, Johnson stole more than $12,000 worth of jewelry before packing his belongings and taking off.
Johnson was last known to be driving a red four-door Nissan vehicle with a Florida license plate.
The woman told police that on Monday Johnson gave her a check for $3,600 and stated it came from his mother as a pre-wedding gift. Police said they found that check was stolen from a prior victim he had scammed the same way.
According to JSO, the suspect is known to have scammed at least three women in Jacksonville who have been scammed out of thousands of dollars.
Police said their investigation revealed the suspect had a similar incident in Savannah, Ga., where he met another victim over the Internet. They said Johnson married that woman and ended up taking a rental vehicle along with $5,000 cash.
Johnson has theft and bigamy warrants out of Georgia and is an absconder from parole in Michigan. The suspect has previous arrests for extortion, uttering, fleeing from police, larceny, and receiving stolen property. He currently has outstanding warrants in Michigan, California, and Georgia and has been on the run since 2005.
On Thursday, a warrant was issued in Duval County for Johnson on a charge of grand theft. The judge issued a $100,000 bond.
Anyone with information about Johnson's whereabouts is asked to contact JSO at 904-630-0500 or Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS to remain anonymous.
