JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The children of service members often wonder, what happens to mommy and daddy when they're deployed? A local man is trying to answer those questions, with a children's book.
Ross Mackenzie said the goal of the book is to help kids through tough times when their parents are away at sea. Mackenzie wrote "My Sailor Dad" to help kids of all ages understand what happens while their parents are away.
In the story, the child talks about some of the really tough questions. Such as, do you still love me when you're gone and most importantly, are you coming home?
The story is written through the eyes of a child. It emphasizes the grandeur of the ships and tries to minimize the element of danger, including those of his own kids.
“There is danger in what daddy does but to a large degree, it's really not all that different from the dangers that are all around us,” said Mackenzie.
Mackenzie is often away on counter-narcotic deployments. He once taught freshmen English at the Naval Academy and has authored one book prior, Brief Points, that also helps families understand more about the military experience.
The book features fascinating oil on canvas illustrations by artist and Vietnam vet Marvin Jarboe. Some of its details may register with Navy parents themselves.
"My Sailor Dad" is the first in a series called "Patriot Kids." The next one, "My Soldier Dad", is in the publishing process.
