FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- A six-month investigation into distribution of crack cocaine on Amelia Island ended with more than seven federal indictments and 10 arrests on 27 state charges.
The Fernandina Beach Police Department said the first arrest of Operation Store Front was last month, when Rafael Washington was accused of selling crack cocaine through Side Hustle Fashions, a clothing and shoe store in the Jasmine Shopping Center.
Police said undercover officers bought cocaine from Washington in and near the store.
"Drugs are prevalent in small cities and large cities. Sometimes we know are drug dealers because we are a small community and the public comes to us and lets us know what's going on in our neighborhood," said Fernandina Beach police Capt. David Bishop. "They always come up with new ideas, and we have to battle that back and come up with new ideas ourselves with the use of informants and anything we can to get these people off the streets," Bishop said.
Investigators said the retail business is legitimate and Washington only operated one section of the store. The business remains open and none of the co-tenants were charged or suspected of being involved in cocaine sales.
Of 14 arrests, only Washington and eight others were named at this time. Police are looking for five additional people wanted on federal warrants and five on state warrants.
In addition to cocaine, during the arrests officers also confiscated a firearm, marijuana and large amounts of cash.
The operation included agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration's Jacksonville task force and resources of the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Nassau County State Attorney's Office.
