A bus carrying 21 students from North Marion Middle School and North Marion High School was struck by the tractor-trailer Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 301 at 155th Street near Citra, officials say.

Reinaldo Gonzalez, 30, was charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving with serious bodily injury in the Sept. 23 crash.

Frances Margay Schee, a 13-year-old North Marion Middle School student, was killed in the crash. The bus had stopped on U.S. Highway 301 to let students off when it was struck.

Gonzalez was on his cell phone prior to the crash, troopers said. Investigators also believe Gonzalez violated federal regulations by driving too many hours.

Several other children, the bus driver and Gonzalez were injured in the crash.

Gonzalez's attorney, Larry Turner, said his client understands "the gravity of the situation and he does feel bad about the loss of life and the injuries."
