College Students Expelled Over 'Fight'

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Ten female students at Edward Waters College were expelled for what the students called a fake fight that was caught on tape.
The incident occurred in the girls' dorm at Edward Waters College when a group of girls simulated fighting -- they said just for fun. In the video, it shows the girls laughing, but the college was not laughing. Ten students were given letters that said they were expelled from school for what happened.
“Only thing they can do is write an appeal,” said Mariah Clark of Edward Waters College. “But you still have to leave. I can't figure that out; they're college students. Where can they go?”
The video Channel 4 had was shot on a cell phone, but the school reviewed video recorded on security cameras that don't have microphones. The students said if school officials could hear the video, they would know that it wasn't serious fighting. School officials said it has nothing to do with fighting. They said the students' behavior was inappropriate.
“When our behavior is outside of respectful communication, that involves students, faculty or employees, we investigate it and we administer corrective action,” said Michael Rogers of Edward Waters College.
The students who are looking for a place to stay said they don't feel the punishment fits the crime.
“They say we're not supposed to be having horseplay in dorms; everybody horseplays now and then, and they're just kicking everybody out and not trying to listen to what we have to say,” said Clark.
The students said they were given the option to appeal. School officials said the students would have the opportunity to reapply at a later date.
