ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- At least three people were hurt in a wreck midday Tuesday at the intersection of state Road 16 and Varella Avenue.
St. Johns County firefighters had to cut two people out of the car. Thelma Howard, 53, and Arileshi Mitchell, 18 -- both of St. Augustine -- were flown to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.
Michael Amico, 73, the driver of the van that struck the car, was transported to Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine.
The Florida Highway Patrol said charges of careless driving were pending because the car did not stop for a red light and pulled into the path of the van.
That light was out of service after the wreck as one of the vehicles involved smashed into the traffic signal control box. Troopers estimated the cost of replacing the signal juction box at $20,000.
