2 Killed In Boat Crash Honored At YMCA

About 100 people gathered in the courtyard at the Dye-Clay Family YMCA Tuesday afternoon to remember and honor two women they said would never be forgotten.

The number of people at the tribute for Jakki Allen and Inmaculada Pierce, better known as Macu, was evidence of just how many lives the woman touched.

The two co-workers and friends were among the five people killed in an Easter boating tragedy on the Intracoastal Waterway. Many of the nine others who were injured when their boat crashed into a docked tugboat remain hospitalized.

One by one, family and friends at the tribute for Allen and Pierce shared memories and stories of better times.

"She was always there to help us. She always encouraged us and was always on the sidelines for every game cheering us on. All I know is our whole volleyball team misses her, and I truly do," said one young speaker at Tuesday's memorial.

Although it has been weeks since the crash, many people told Channel 4 the reality of the tragedy hasn't sunken in yet.

"There are moments when it's very difficult," said vice president of operation at the YMCA, Sharon Crosby.

Allen's husband of 25 years, Craig Allen, knows that as well anybody. He said his life has been nothing short of difficult since the boating accident.

"Day-to-day. Just kind of getting things in order, getting the affairs in order and taking care of the children," Allen said.

Pierce's sister, Maria Sooter, fought back tears as she shared one of her biggest regrets and one of her life's most difficult lessons.

"The last time I saw my sister was Thanksgiving, and I regret not talking to her. So, if anybody has sisters or brothers, keep in contact with them because this is really hard. We love her and we'll miss her," Sooter said.

The YMCA plans to hold an annual 5K run in memory of both women beginning next April.
