ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH, Fla. -- St. Johns County paramedics tried to revive a surfer pulled unconscious from the surf Thursday afternoon at St. Augustine Beach, but he died at Flagler Hospital.
Deputies and St. Johns County Fire-Rescue were called just after 1 p.m. when the 25-year-old was surfing at Crescent Beach disappeared under the water. After a surfboard was located, rescuers searched the shore with personal watercraft.
Beachgoers near Mary Street in St. Augustine Beach waved down rescuers to say that saw a person in the water.
The surfer was transported to Flagler Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
The sheriff's office identified the victim as Ronald Earl Stiles III, of Gainesville.
Although deputies said Stiles' death appears consistent with that of an accidental drowning and foul play is not suspected, an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
