JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's sea turtle nesting season along the beaches, but colorful and larger-than-life turtles are popping up all around Jacksonville.
The first nine sculptures in the Turtle Trails public-art project were installed Thursday -- one at the front door of
the local station.
Channel 4's turtle is named "Telly." "Monty" -- looking like a monarch butterfly -- sits in Hemming Plaza. That design was chosen from artwork submitted by Channel 4's viewers.
The other turtles deployed this week are at Friendship Fountain, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, Arlington Toyota, Cummer Museum of Art, Daily's on Old St. Augustine Road just north of Interstate 95 and at the Child Guidance Center on St. Augustine Road just north of University Boulevard.
A total of 25 turtle sculptures will be placed around the city by the end of May -- each sponsored by a local business or organization.
Proceeds from the project help the Child Guidance Center, which provides mental health services to children and families in north Florida.
