HAINES CITY, Fla. -- Florida detectives said they're working with Mexican authorities to find a teenager who went missing with her 4-week-old baby.
Chawntel Smith of Bartow and her daughter Asariela Garcia-Smith were last seen at a friend's home in Haines City on Friday afternoon.
Pasco County Sheriff's detectives said the 15-year-old flew with her baby to Mexico City the same day from Orlando International Airport.
She used her own passport but it's unclear how she arranged the flight or why she traveled to Mexico.
Investigators said Chawntel had recently talked about going to Guatemala to visit a man who may be the baby's father.
Anyone with any information about the activities of Chawntel and Asariela on Friday, May 1, or if anyone has any knowledge regarding Chawntel's travel arrangements, is encouraged to call the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 863-534-6200 or 800-226-0344.
