Woman Hit By Police SUV Recovering

Police Run Over Accomplished Pianist Sunbathing On Beach

Investigators said Anne Marie Giffin was lying on the beach last Friday when the incident happened. None of the tires hit Giffin, but witnesses said the SUV had to be lifted off of her.

According to officials at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, Giffin was in fair condition on Monday.

The man who taught Giffin piano years ago, Dr. Gerson Yessin, said he was stunned to learn what happened to his former student.

He said he played side-by-side with Giffin in concert on several occasions.

"She played beautifully. She always played beautifully," Yessin said. "Here is a girl who has never done anything bad to anyone, just minding her own business and somebody comes along and drives over her, broke all of her ribs and it parted her scalp so that the scalp was separated."

On the evening after the incident, investigators said the police officer behind the wheel of the SUV did a U-turn on the beach and rolled over Giffin. The investigation into why the officer did not see Giffin remains under investigation.

Yessin said he wants Giffin to know that as she recovers in the hospital he's thinking of her and looks forward to making beautiful music with her in the future.

"I know you're going to be alright. I know you'll be just as good in six weeks. You have a lot of people who will help you in every way they can," Yessin said.

Giffin's mother told Channel 4 Giffin is getting better with each passing day.

Jacksonville Beach Police said the officer involved in the crash, Officer Lewis Keller, has been placed on administrative duty until an internal investigation is complete.
