UPDATED: 5:42 pm EDT May 5, 2009

Initial reports from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said a 75-year-old man shot his 72-year-old wife, then killed himself in their home in the Plantation Bay development.

Family members who were visiting the couple call 911 early Tuesday to report the shooting.

Richard Nickel was pronounced dead at the scene. Gail Nickel was transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where she was reported to be in critical condition.

Investigators said Richard Nickel shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself inside their home on Kingsley Drive.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, a .22-caliber gun and a note about his wife's frail health condition were found at the scene.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is assisting Flagler authorities in processing the scene and the incident remains under investigation.
