POSTED: Tuesday, May 5, 2009
UPDATED: 10:09 pm EDT May 5, 2009

A baby was found dead after being thrown from a car in Tampa early Tuesday morning and authorities said they have arrested the man they believe took the child from his mother.

Police said Anthony McTear Jr., 21, got into a fight with the baby's mother and attacked both of them. He then fled with the 3-month-old baby in his blue Chevrolet Impala.

The baby, Emanuel Wesley Murray, was found near Interstate 275 by Jason Bird, a news photographer for WTVT-TV headed to work at 4:30 a.m.

"It was laying there with its eyes open," he said. "I couldn't look at it. It freaked me out, but fortunately law enforcement came right away."

The baby was pronounced dead at the scene. A Hillsborough County sheriff's spokeswoman said the medical examiner's office to determine just when the baby died.

Tampa police later located McTear's car at 1601 River Cove in Tampa and arrested him on charges of first-degree murder, felony battery, aggravated child abuse, kidnapping and burglary with a battery.

McTear has a prior record. He was previously arrested on charges including felony battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic battery by strangulation.
