JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man convicted of shooting his roommate in the head and leaving him to die in a car was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.
Police said last year Harens Erazo snapped when his friend, 26-year-old Patrick Donnelly, made fun of him. Erazo shot and killed Donnelly while they were driving on Beach Boulevard.
Erazo learned his sentence after Donnelly's mother, Kathy Johnson, gave an emotional statement from the stand.
"I love you my Patrick. You're in my heart and my soul," Johnson said.
She traveled from Massachusetts to Jacksonville to be able to take the stand and tell the judge about her son.
"I cannot and I will not ever stop thinking about missing my baby, my son, he's my life," Johnson said.
Donnelly was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car. He'd been shot in the head. A day later, police arrested Erazo, saying he killed Donnelly because Donnelly had made fun of his attempts to flirt with a passenger in their car.
Convicted last month by a jury, Erazo sat emotionless on Friday as Donnelly's family and friends told the judge he has destroyed many lives. Among them, was Donnelly's best friend, Joe McGaulsky.
"Hearing those words was the most surreal moment of my life. It was a feeling I can never explain and will never forget. On that date and time, a part of me died along with Pat, and I will never be the same again," McGaulsky said.
Erazo's mother was also in court on Friday. She cried as she apologized in curt for her son's actions, pleading for mercy.
However, it did not sway Judge Mallory Cooper. She handed down the harshest sentence possible. She told Erazo that Donnelly will never walk the earth again, and neither should he.
She gave him life in prison with no chance of parole.
Afterward, Donnelly's mother said words cannot describe her loss, but the sentence is just.
"It's so sad. I feel sad for his family. I feel sad for all of us. This doesn't bring my son back, but at least I know he'll never ever do this to somebody again," Johnson said.
Erazo said nothing as he was led away from the courtroom. He was given 30 days to file an appeal.
