JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 16-year veteran of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department has been named firefighter of the year.
For one year, David Doucette's peers said he was the bravest of Jacksonville's bravest.
Doucette received the award Friday night at the Firefighter's Union Hall on the Westside. He received the honor for many heroic acts over the past year, including diving into a pond to pull out a person trapped in a car.
Doucette said it's all just part of the job.
"I feel like everybody in this room deserves the same thing that I'm getting right now. They went into burning buildings, and I went in the water. That's how I got the award. I was just looking at that kid in the water like I'd look at my own kid in the water. So, I wouldn't sit there and just wait for someone to drown because I wouldn't let my son drown," Doucette said.
Other awards were also given out at the ceremony to recognize several fire and rescue workers in the city for their performance and duty.
