LAKE CITY, Fla. -- An investigation that began when a neighbor found three children in a home alone on Saturday lead to the arrest of the parents on charges of aggravated child abuse.
Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the home found the children padlocked in a room with no air conditioning. They said the living conditions were unsanitary and there was no food in the house.
Authorities told Channel 4's Vickie Pierre that there were signs of abuse on the 2-, 5- and 7-year-old children.
According to the arrest report, when officers asked the children how they got the injuries, one child said, "Daddy hit me because I was being bad."
Deputies said Joseph Brenton, 28, and Christina Ramirez, 22, were arrested without incident when they came home.
The children and a 1-year-old that was with the parents were in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
"It's tough for us," Columbia County Sgt. Edward Seifert said. "We're glad we found them so quickly before anything worse happened, but it's horrible that kids were involved."
The sheriff's office and DCF were still investigating.
