JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The former pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church pleaded guilty Thursday to charges he inappropriately touched one underage member of his congregation and sent explicit text messages to another.
Darrell Gilyard did not make a statement of any kind other than saying "yes" when Judge Michael Weatherby said asked him if he was guilty of one count of lewd molestation and one count of lewd conduct.
Gilyard agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a sentence of three years in prison and three years of sex-offender probation. If Gilyard had been convicted in a trial, he could have faced 15 years on each count.
After the plea, his lawyer rushed Gilyard out a side door.
Prosecutors said Gilyard has a history of inappropriate relationships with his parishioners.
"He was a person who obviously could not control his sexual desires," said Assistant State Attorney Alan Mizrahi. "He used his position of trust to gain access to children and he used that position of trust to gratify himself."
Other women have come forward to say Gilyard had inappropriate relationships with them, but the only criminal charges included the two juveniles.
Gilyard resigned from Shiloh last year.
Gilyard will be formally sentenced on June 11.
