JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Department of Defense said a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers based out of Jacksonville was killed on this week in Iraq.
Defense officials said Dr. Maged Hussein, 43, died on May 25 -- Memorial Day -- when an improvised explosive device blew up near his vehicle in Fallujah.
Hussein is the first engineer out of 6,000 sent overseas to have died in the war.
"He was killed while trying to really be a help to the people of Iraq, said Dr. Richard Punnett, a friend and former Corps of Engineers co-worker. "He was intelligent, noble, and very fine person."
Hussein had been in Iraq since 2006 and with the Army Corps since 2003.
"He was hand-picked by the Army to go because of his skills, and because he could speak Arabic," said Col. Paul Grosskruger, district engineer with the Army Corps in Jacksonville. "He worked with the Corps in rebuilding the infrastructure in Iraq."
Hussein leaves behind a wife and a 5-year-old daughter, who relocated to his native Egypt during his current tour in Iraq.
