JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The 911 call made early Tuesday morning before a fatal police-involved shooting in Brentwood has been released by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
According to investigators, 29-year-old Dominic Davis was the man shot and killed by an officer after police received a 911 call from a frightened woman.
The woman called 911 about 3:30 a.m. about an argument with a former boyfriend. On the tape, the woman told an operator a man was there and she has a restraining order against him and that she was fearful because he had a knife.
"I have a person with a knife who has a restraining order against him," said the woman, whose identity has not been released. "I'm here and he showed up and won't leave, and he has a knife. He's threatening."
The 911 call was disconnected shortly after the woman said things were getting worse. When the 911 operator called back an unknown man answered the phone. Another man and a woman could be heard arguing in the background before a woman picked up the phone and told the operator "everything is OK."
"Oh, no. We're still sending officers out. There's a very violent background there," the operator said.
Police said the armed man, later identified as Davis, was gone when they arrived, but he had smashed the windows on the woman's car before leaving.
About an hour later while the woman was filing a police report, Davis returned with his hands underneath his shirt and claiming to have a knife and making threats, police said.
"The officer tried to keep a safe distance between himself and the suspect, and actually took cover behind a large tree and at the same time continued to yell at the suspect, "Show me your hands," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Rick Graham. "What's important to understand here is that at this point the officer is aware that this is the same person who less than hour ago was reported to be armed with a knife and was breaking out windows in a car."
He said when Davis continued to move toward the officer shouting threats and refusing to obey the officer's commands to show his hands, the officer felt the need to protect himself and chose to use deadly force.
Davis died at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.
Police said Davis did not have a knife in his immediate area. They said there was a knife found on the exterior of the crime scene, but they did not clarify the distance between the knife and suspect.
The officer involved -- a five-year veteran of the JSO -- will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in shootings involving police.
Detectives continue to investigate the incident.
This is the sixth JSO-involved shooting in 2009. The last one occurred on Feb. 13.
