Girl Bitten By Pygmy Rattlesnake

Venomous Snake Bites 7-Year-Old 3 Times

POSTED: Wednesday, June 3, 2009

A 7-year-old girl bitten three times by a snake lurking in her back yard returned to her Clay County home Wednesday with quite a story to tell.

Snake Bite -- Docors Marks On Victim's Foot
A Clay County girl is recovering after being bitten in the foot, hand and hip by a pygmy rattlesnake.
The girl, Allison, said she was playing in the yard when she felt something prick her. She never saw the venomous snake that bit her on her hand, foot and hip.

She said she was playing in her secret hideout on Saturday with her little brother when she was bitten.

"I was under the deck and scooting out on my bottom. I didn't know what poked me," Allison said.

Doctors later told the girl and her parents that the pricks were from the bites of a pygmy rattlesnake.

Allison spent three days at Wolfson Children's Hospital for treatment. After being released, the 7-year-old still had marks on her foot where doctors tracked the swelling and also a bruise on her hip.

"She had seven rounds of antivenin. They told us most snake patients get around three rounds of the antivenin, but because she was bitten three times. It was scary," said Allison's mother, Jill.

She said at first she thought Allison had been bitten by a spider; however, she called 911 when the areas began to swell.

"If she hadn't have had those multiple wounds we probably would have taken a wait-and-see approach, but because of the multiple wounds we knew something was not right," Jill said.

Doctors said Allison's recovery should take two weeks.

Allison said she has learned a lesson.

"I'm going to watch where I step and make sure I look out for snakes," Allison said.

Her parents said they believe the snake may have been near the home because of the recent rain. They said the plan to cover the opening underneath their deck.

Florida is a hotbed for snakes that can sometimes be found living in rivers, in back yards and even swimming pools. For information about the types of snakes that live in the state visit, SnakeList.htm.
