CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- Recently received postcards have been causing property tax confusion among some Clay County residents. The postcards offer to help people cut their property tax bills -- for a fee.
The mailings state, "Urgent Property Tax Information, and some people thought they were sent from the property appraiser's office. However, that's not the case.
Several concerned residents have called the Clay County Property Appraiser to find out what was happening.
"This mail was not generated by the Clay County Property Appraiser's Office," said Clay County Property Appraiser Roger Suggs.
The postcards were sent by a Michigan company claiming that for a fee of several hundred dollars it can help save people money on taxes. A call to the phone number on the postcard is answered a by a machine prompting the caller to leave a message and go to a Web site. The site states that for about $300 the company can mediate to help lower taxes.
The Clay County property appraisers said homeowners should be careful.
"We can do the same thing these folks are offering to do at no charge to the taxpayer," Suggs said.
Sam Dababah said he runs the company in Michigan. He told Channel 4 he has been having trouble with his call center, and that's why callers get a recording. He also said the postcards mailed out are not a scam, and that soon his company's service will not be available in Florida because the property taxes in the state are already too low.
Still, Clay County residents like Mary Ellen Hahn are upset. Hahn said she received a postcard and called the company to say, "I think you're a scam, and I think you're taking advantage of people."
Officials in Clay County suggest residents who received the postcards simply toss them out.
