HOLLY HILL, Fla. -- More federal help is now on the way to several northeast Florida counties hit hard by flooding last month.
While visiting parts of Volusia County that were affected by the floods, Gov. Charlie Crist announced the state has received approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for public assistance for Baker, Clay, Flagler, Putnam and Volusia counties. Crist made the announcement at the Holly Hill Disaster Recovery Center where he presented a $25,000 check. The money came from the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund and benefits Volusia Interfaiths/Agencies Networking in Disaster (VIND), an area recovery organization.
"The weeks and months that follow a disaster are often the most difficult for businesses and families trying to rebuild their community,” said Crist. “This $25,000, in addition to the FEMA assistance, will increase the ability of Floridians to recover more rapidly and effectively.”
The public assistance from FEMA provides federal grants for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly owned facilities and the facilities of certain private non-profit organizations.
This particular FEMA designation does not include help for individuals. Individuals in Volusia County became eligible for federal disaster aid last week, when President Obama issued a presidential disaster declaration.
