Brunswick residents were cleaning up Friday, a day after a tornado touched down in the area. The severe weather toppled trees, downed power lines and damaged a gas station and homes in a Brunswick neighborhood.

Some Brunswick residents are cleaning up after a small tornado touched down in the area.

After investigating, the National Weather Service confirmed that a small, isolated tornado is responsible for the damage at the Sunoco Fuel Center just off Exit 29 on Interstate 95.

The high winds blew out the windows and tore down the back wall of the gas station. Cashier C.J. Larry said he and the store's customers huddled in the back of the store as the windows crashed in.

"It was so shocking to see my store gone, basically," said manager Latonya Gibson.

The tornado reduced the front exterior of the gas station to shards of glass. Where the back wall used to be, there was only exposed insulation remaining.

No injuries were reported in the storm.

The tornado's path appears to have begun near the Sunoco station and then continued toward the residential community directly behind it.

"I was watching TV and the wind started blowing. I tried to shut the door but the wind was blowing so hard I couldn't shut the door," said Delores Hall.

Resident James Jones said he arrived home just after the storm to see his house was the worst hit.

"My boat was in the yard. Trees broke down and the fence was torn apart," Jones said.

Residents who were home during the short storm described it as a scary experience with Mother Nature. They said it sounded like a train coming. The sky was black, and they remember strong horizontal winds.

The winds uprooted trees, ripped shingles from homes and threw unsecured objects in the air.

"We had some pretty severe tornados on Mother's Day of last year, so you know, this time of year with the temperature the way it is and the weather, it can happen," said Captain Jay Wiggins, of the Glynn County Emergency Management Agency.

Most residents agreed that Thursday's storm was the worst they had ever seen while living in Brunswick, and many said they're just waiting on the insurance agents to arrive and estimate the cost of all of the damage. They said they are lucky that no one was harmed.
