The Mathews Bridge opened 1953 over the St. Johns River, bringing vehicle traffic between downtown Jacksonville and the Arlington neighborhood and Jacksonville's beaches.

The bridge was named for John E. Mathews, a Florida state legislator and later Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court, who helped raise funds for the bridge's construction.[
