PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. -- Imperial Sugar is starting to refine crystal sugar in Georgia for the first time in 16 months since a deadly explosion devastated the plant near Savannah.
Imperial Sugar CEO John Sheptor and other executives of the Texas-based company were scheduled to mark the new startup of the nation's second-largest sugar refinery today in Port Wentworth.
An explosion at the plant on Feb. 7, 2008, killed 14 people. Investigators determined the blast was caused by accumulations of sugar dust that ignited like gunpowder.
In July 2008, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration decided that Imperial Sugar should face fines of more than $8.7 million for violations at the Georgia plant, as well as one in Louisiana. After the fines were announced, the company said it would contest OSHA's findings.
