PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A volunteer fire chief from Putnam County has been arrested and accused of scamming the county.
A Putnam County volunteer fire chief was arrested Monday for fraud and grand theft.
Robert Meyer, 48, of Palatka, was charged with claiming he went out on calls from Fire Station 22 where he's the volunteer chief and collecting money for it. Authorities said he signed off as responding to around 170 calls in 2007 and 2008, but the state attorney's office said he never went.
Authorities said volunteers do receive money, $8 a call, and with the amount they said he signed off as going to, it totaled between $1400 and $1500.
Fire chief isn't Meyer's only job. He also works for Clay County in the criminal justice system.
Meyer bonded out of the Putnam County jail hours after his arrest on Monday.
