2 Dead, 2 Injured in Baker Co. Crash

All Airlifted To Shands After Car Hit Oak Tree

POSTED: Thursday, June 18, 2009

Two people died and two others were seriously injured in a car crash in Baker County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. One of the injured is a 4-year-old boy.

The crash happened about 6 p.m. Wednesday on County Road 125 just south of Shepard Lane near Macclenny. FHP said the car was traveling north on County Road 125 and for unknown reasons veered off the road onto the shoulder. FHP said the driver, Paul Durant, 57, of Pensacola, did not correct the path of the car and did not appear to apply the brakes. After traveling about 175 feet, the car hit a large oak tree.

The driver and the front-seat passenger were trapped in the vehicle for about an hour and a half before Baker County Fire Rescue was able to extricate them.

All of the car's occupants were airlifted to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center. FHP said passengers Daniel Burke, 55, of England and Gerald Ward, 56, of Sanderson, Fla., died from their injuries. The driver and 4-year-old Matthew Durant, of Pensacola, received serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
