Clay County's fire chief, who was suspended on Friday after an investigation into misuse of a county vehicle and what were called inconsistencies in hours worked, has resigned.
Chief Frank Ennist submitted his resignation Tuesday morning to Clay County Manager Fritz Behring. It becomes effective immediately.
Behring said Ennist acknowledged misuse of a county vehicle and failed to offer a credible explanation concerning documentation of hours worked.
These issues came up during an investigation into allegations made by a female employee against three managers in the department of a hostile work environment. That investigation is still under way and the results are pending.
"This situation has necessitated a change in department leadership," Behring said in a statement released at midday Tuesday.
In a letter to county officials, Ennist wrote that "personal and financial hardships have required me to revisit my career choices."
Deputy Chief David Motes was appointed as interim fire chief.
"I am confident that Interim Chief Motes possesses the skills required to oversee the department," Behring said.
