Toddler Left In Truck Dies

Caregiver Charged With Interfering With Investigation

POSTED: Wednesday, June 24, 2009
UPDATED: 12:32 pm EDT June 25, 2009

Police said a baby sitter returning from the store with four children in her pickup truck Wednesday afternoon did not realize for two hours that a toddler was left in her vehicle. The boy was identified as 20-month-old Bernard Davis.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene. Police told Channel 4 that the baby sitter, Shantel Wilcher, 38, of Jacksonville, was charged with interfering with a lawful investigation.

Wilcher was released on bond Thursday.

Homicide detectives were told the woman returned to her home in the 8100 block of Chaucer Court about 1:30 p.m. with the toddler, along with a 3-year-old she was watching and her own two teenage children.

"Two hours later, she realized she may have left the child in the car," Sgt. Derrick Lewis said.

Wilcher took the boy in the house and performed CPR. Jacksonville Fire-Rescue responded to the home, but the child could not be revived.

Police said Wilcher was arrested for giving false information during a criminal investigation. Police also said she and other family members misled police for hours in an attempt to hide the fact they were operating a non-licensed day care.

The death investigation will be reviewed by the state attorney's office.

Bernard's mother, Shadaryl Davis, said hours went by, hours of worrying, before she found out what happened.

"I had called, and I had cooked and everything," Davis said. "Sometimes she'll bring him at 6, sometimes she'll be a little late. But then time started dropping. Seven came, 8 came. I called about five times, didn't get no call, nothing. The police came to my door and said, 'Ms. Davis, we want to make sure that you are here.' So I was like, 'What's going on?' He didn't say nothing else."

Bernard's mom is now searching for answers, and ways to talk to Bernard's 3-year-old brother about a tragedy she's still trying to comprehend.

"He always had a smile on his face. He always was happy," Davis said. "Him and his brother. Now, I wake up in the morning and I know my son's going to be like, 'Where's Pig at mom? Where he at?'"
