JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two men now face fraud charges, accused of conspiring to make it look like a car belonging to one of the men was stolen.
According to Jacksonville police, Michael Bernard reported his car stolen to police and his insurance company on Jan. 2. He told police his car was taken from a store parking lot on the Westside in late December, while he was out of town.
On Dec. 31, police said Bernard purchased a car from Leonard Cash, who worked at an Orange Park car dealership. According to a police report, someone else at that car dealership challenged Bernard's story to investigators, saying he had been in the dealership looking at a car on a day when he had claimed to be out of town.
Police interviewed Cash, who told them that he and Bernard had an agreement to make Bernard's car disappear. Cash said Bernard gave him the keys to the car and left it at the dealership. Investigators said Cash was going to take the car to a salvage yard, and then help Bernard with a fraudulent insurance claim.
On April 27, police arrested Cash on suspicion of fraudulent use of personal information. When officers arrested him, they found he had several cars that were reported stolen. Police later learned that the owners of those cars were involved in similar insurance fraud cases. Bernard was then arrested by police on Monday.
