Baptist Improves Delivery Room Feel

Touches Of Luxury In Rooms More Inviting

POSTED: Thursday, June 25, 2009

Expecting mothers can expect a lot more out of their delivery experience at Baptist Medical Center South.

"We are trying to create an environment that doesn't feel like a hospital," hospital administrator Ron Robinson said. "We think that helps in the healing process."

The hospital increased the number of delivery rooms from 12 to 22 and re-envisioned the delivery experience.

"It's really very different than what a traditional hospital has been in the past," Robinson said.

They've created an inviting space with touches of luxury. The halls are lined with art work by local artists. The rooms were designed to be accommodating to the mother and family who may be visiting or staying over night.

Now, you may think you're in a resort hotel. Every room comes with a safe, a refrigerator and a flat screen television. While you're looking after the mom you can check your e-mail. It even comes with a remote for the shade.

Baptist South also added a 14-bed newborn intensive care unite, or NICU.

"Now we can serve our community and all of the patients that originally had to go downtown for this type of care, don't have to go downtown," Robinson said.

The intensive care unit will also treat the overflow patients from Wolfson Children's Hospital. It features state-of-the-art equipment and the same inviting design aesthetic. They hope the nice environment will calm parents, for whom the experience of having a newborn in intensive care can be frightening.

"Understanding that, the most important thing is making that baby better and generally making families more comfortable," nurse manager Jennifer Walton said.

The newly completed project is part of an $85 million expansion at Baptist South, which includes three new floors.

The new additions were built to accommodate a growing number of expecting mothers who want to have their babies at Baptist South. This year, they're expecting 1,500 deliveries.
